You wouldn't scroll for 4 hours if each minute cost you something. So we made it cost something.

Screen time reports guilt-trip you. App limits get overridden in 3 taps. Neither works because there's no real consequence. ScrollTax adds one: every minute of TikTok costs reading, focus, or sunlight. Brainrot gets expensive fast.

How it works

Three steps to take back your time

01
🔒

Tax your apps

Pick the apps draining your life — TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit. ScrollTax locks them via Screen Time. No override.

02

Earn tax points

Read, focus, do chores, walk, or go outside. Every real-world activity earns points worth ~5 minutes of screen time.

03

Spend or get locked

1 point = ~5 min of screen time. When you're out of points, you're locked out. Want more? Go earn it.

Earn sources

5 ways to earn your screen time

Your real life is the currency. Every activity earns tax points worth ~5 minutes of screen time each.

How spending works

Points deduct automatically

1

Every ~5 minutes of taxed app usage costs 1 tax point

2

Points are deducted automatically in the background

3

When your balance hits 0, your taxed apps lock instantly

4

Earn more points to unlock again — no cooldown, no waiting

About debt

If you use more than you've earned, the overage carries to the next day. Tomorrow's balance = earned + grace - debt.

Why ScrollTax

Limits don't work. Consequences do

The problem

Screen time trackers show you how long you doom scroll. You feel bad. You scroll more.

App limiters let you set a cap. You tap "Ignore" in 3 seconds. Zero consequences.

The fix

ScrollTax turns screen time into a currency you produce. Want 20 minutes of TikTok? That costs 40 minutes of reading. The price is real. The habit change is automatic.

No guilt. No streaks. No leaderboards
No dark patterns
Data stays on your device
Works in the background automatically

FAQ

Common questions

How does ScrollTax stop doom scrolling?
It makes doom scrolling expensive. ScrollTax locks your apps using Apple Screen Time. Unlike willpower-based limits you can tap through, you physically cannot access the apps without earning tax points first. Want TikTok? Go read a book.
Which apps can I block?
Any app on your iPhone — TikTok, Instagram, Twitter/X, YouTube, Reddit, games, news, streaming, browsers, anything. If it's on your phone, you can tax it.
Does it work without opening the app?
Yes. Once set up, the Monitor extension runs in the background. Your apps lock automatically when your budget runs out — no manual steps needed.
What if I run out of points mid-day?
Your selected apps lock. You get 1 emergency unlock per day (5 minutes) if you truly need it. Or read for 10 minutes to earn more time immediately.
Does it track what I'm reading or watching?
No. ScrollTax only tracks time, steps, and daylight. It never sees content. All data stays on your device.
Does it work without an Apple Watch?
Yes. Reading, focus, chores, and steps work on any iPhone. Sunlight tracking requires Apple Watch with timeInDaylight data.
Why is each point "approximately" 5 minutes?
ScrollTax uses Apple's DeviceActivity API, which fires a callback roughly every 5 minutes of cumulative app use. The timing is controlled by iOS, not by ScrollTax, so it may vary slightly depending on system load.
